Hymnology

Gimme that Baptist Identity Religion,
Gimme that Baptist Identity Religion,
Gimme that Baptist Identity Religion,
It's good enough for me.

It was good for John the Baptist,
It was good for John the Baptist,
It was good for John the Baptist,
It's good enough for me.

It will dunk us all in water,
It will dunk us all in water,
It will dunk us all in water,
It's good enough for me.

Makes me judge everybody,
Makes me judge everybody,
Makes me judge everybody,
It's good enough for me.

Women stay barefoot and pregnant,
Women stay barefoot and pregnant,
Women stay barefoot and pregnant,
It's good enough for me.

It will take us few to Heaven,
It will take us few to Heaven,
It will take us few to Heaven,
It's good enough for me.

Makes us all spooky fundies,
Makes us all spooky fundies,
Makes us all spooky fundies,
It's good enough for me.

(Everybody, now)

Gimme that Baptist Identity Religion,
Gimme that Baptist Identity Religion,
Gimme that Baptist Identity Religion,
It's good enough for me.

That, my friend, is funny.

I hope someday to hang out with you. You have the kind of slightly bizarre mind that I deeply respect.

Bart,

You are now in the lead for the BEST RAGGIN' BLOGGER OF 2008 award.

This may turn out to be a very good year for raggin'

David, Wade, and CB,

Glad you all liked it.

Dave Miller,

I take exception to the word "slightly."

BTW, and one more thing, Bart,

You do realize that if a female professor teaches this little ditty to her seminary Hymnology class that she will have to speak to the disciplines of Theology, SBC Issues, Baptist Doctrine specifically and she may have to reference the Bible since you included John the Baptist.

In addition she may have to deal with hermeneutics and exegetical methodologies and a few other things that a well rounded seminary degree should include, such as: What constitutes a biblical and theological Baptist identity?

Of course, if she only has women in her Hymnology class she will not be in any jeopardy of losing her job. Right?

C.B.,

Any professor of anything who teaches this little ditty deserves a pink slip regardless of the professor's gender.

The first and last stanza remind me of an old poem...

There was a young poet from Japan
Whose poetry no one could scan.
He said, "Yes, I know,
It really is so,
But I always try to get as many words in the last line as I can."

Bart,
You blew your Baptist Identity. You sang ALL the verses. You know we don't sing more than 3 of 'em at any given service.

Bart,
Is this from the new Baptist Hymnal?

Bart,

You are in the wrong profession. Too bad that the writer's strike is over. Leno probably could have used some help :-)

SelahV,

Your comment was almost as funny as Bart's.

Bart, I only called you slightly bizarre to be nice.

Well played, but can you but the Baptist Faith and Message (2000) to the tune of Salty Dog Blues?
